Leicester’s Sporting Success Statue


A statue celebrating the sporting success of the city sits on Gallowtree Gate.

Leicester’s most iconic landmark, The Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower overlooks the statue.

The bronze statue, depicts three interlinked sportsman in action. Namely a cricketer, a footballer and a rugby player.

The Leicester Mercury and Leicester City Council jointly commissioned the statue. After the outstanding success of the city’s sports teams in their respective 1996/97 seasons.

Martin Williams sculpted the statue at the end of the 1996/97 sports seasons.

Leicestershire County Cricket won the Britannic Assurance County Championship. (I would be very grateful if anyone could share with me a decent photo or any video footage of the trophy presentation)

Leicester City Football Club won the Coca Cola Cup.

And the Leicester Tigers rugby union team won the Pilkington Cup.

The statue was unveiled to the city in 1998.
